A Glimpse of Boat Life

 

As I've mentioned before, one of the things Steve and I love most about our life on Starry Night is sharing the experience with our friends and family.  

During each of the three weeks after Brad and Darlyn left, we had newcomers aboard - most of whom experienced their first taste of what boat life entails. While I think that all of our friends enjoyed their visits, I could also tell that one week was long enough for some of them and that they were ready to get back to the land-based life and the freedom to come and go at will.

Thankfully, the weather was mostly cooperative during our last three weeks, and we were able to either sail, snorkel, paddleboard, fish, or go ashore every day. 

Our guests during the last three weeks included Vijay and Margie, friends of ours from Pratt & Whitney and Siemens days, an old college friend of Steve's, and our great-nephews, Jacob and Zachary. 

We traveled to the same areas that we have been before, with slight variations in the activities depending on the weather conditions and particular interests of each person or group. In order to avoid repetitive descriptions, this remainder of this installment of Steve and Laura's Excellent Adventure will consist only of a photo montage. I hope you enjoy it!

We returned with Jake and Zachary to Nassau on Friday, May 2 and they departed early the next morning. We had intended to stay a couple of days in Nassau to relax and prepare for our return trip to the U.S. but decided to make water, refuel and leave that same day since the weather window looked good and there were things that needed our attention back in Florida.

Best Christmas Gift Ever!

On the day of my last post, December 22, Steve and I were docked in Indian Harbor Beach and I wasn't feeling particularly festive. Jake wasn't doing well and we were going to have a relatively low-key Christmas.  A few hours later, our lives changed in the best possible way!  Steve and I were relaxing after dinner. I was probably playing a game on my phone and he was talking to his brother, David, on his. My phone rang and it was Jessie and Will. Storms and Celebrations in Charleston, and Taking the Alternate Route

In my last post I mentioned that our time in Charleston was wrapping up, but the weather gods had different ideas.... As Steve was finishing the projects at Bridgette's apartment, a tropical system named Debby was gathering strength in the southern Caribbean.  Slowly, but surely, Hurricane Debby made her way northward with a path that was projected to go from the west coast of Florida, across Georgia and straight over Charleston. We weren't particularly worried since we expected that she would lose energy during the pass over Georgia. Unfortunately, the county park officials decided to close the marina, and no one was allowed to stay on their boat. Oh, and they gave us three hours' notice to evacuate! We had already begun securing Starry Night, but thought we would have a full day longer to finish. Fall 2024: Family Gatherings

And in the blink of an eye, three months has passed!! Since my last post, we've traversed many miles and visited lots of folks. We actually left Starry Night for a record three weeks this fall while she was still on the ground in the Deltaville Boatyard. We traveled by car to Connecticut to visit Steve's brother and his wife, Victoria.  While we were there, we enjoyed the fall colors and crisp air. I also had an opportunity to practice speaking Spanish with Victoria's parents, which improved my skills immensely!  (It also highlighted how far I still have to go 😏) Fall Colors in New Milford, CT Enjoying an Indian Summer Afternoon with Family Never ones to sit idle, Steve spent some time cutting down some fallen trees on David's property.  I helped haul the logs to the splitting station.
