The Final Chapter

Starry Night was listed by our broker in Yacht World in mid-May, and after three months, we accepted an offer. The survey process was completed and final acceptance by the buyer was received in mid-September with closing scheduled for the last week of September.

During the months of showings by our broker, Steve and I had taken alternating trips back and forth from Satellite Beach to Charleston to remove our personal items and ensure Starry Night was ship-shape, but we returned together one last time to say our final goodbyes. 

I was much more emotional than either Steve or I expected me to be, but I suppose we shouldn't have been surprised. Change is always hard, and this is a big one.



We remain, nevertheless, convinced that this is the right decision at the right time. As fate would have it, closing was delayed by a week and in the interim a storm was brewing in the Atlantic. We therefore made one more trip to Charleston the following week to make Starry Night storm-ready and say our  REAL, final goodbyes.  This trip reminded of us how owning a boat like ours offers not only freedom but constraints and this has taken some of the sting out of ending this adventure.

And - as those who know us well have reminded us - we did what we set out to do! We explored new places. We learned new skills. We met lots of new people and we shared our adventure with many friends and loved ones, We couldn't have asked more for more.

Ours has been an excellent adventure indeed and we look forward to our next, when the time is right.

Thanks to all of you who were a part of this experience and thank to my Siemens coworkers who encouraged to write this blog. I wouldn't have done so otherwise, and having this chronicle of our time on Starry Night is something I will treasure having.

Best Christmas Gift Ever!

On the day of my last post, December 22, Steve and I were docked in Indian Harbor Beach and I wasn't feeling particularly festive. Jake wasn't doing well and we were going to have a relatively low-key Christmas.  A few hours later, our lives changed in the best possible way!  Steve and I were relaxing after dinner. I was probably playing a game on my phone and he was talking to his brother, David, on his. My phone rang and it was Jessie and Will. I stepped out into our cockpit so I wouldn't disturb Steve's conversation and Jessie told me that they had just received a call from the adoption agency they'd been working with, and that they had been selected by a birth mother to be adoptive parents of a baby boy who had been born in Florida the day before. A Long Trip Home

 Once again, several months have passed since my last post so to recap: Steve and I had just wrapped up our winter/spring season in the Bahamas and were ready to embark on our return trip to Florida. I also alluded to things requiring our attention at home. This prompted us to jump at the first promising weather window even though we had hoped to have a couple of days of down-time before leaving the Bahamas.  What I didn't mention is that our life's circumstances have changed in such a way that we want to spend more time on land with our family and have made the difficult decision to close this chapter of our life and sell Starry Night.  Many people ask whether we are ending our adventure because we're tired of boat life. Fall 2024: Family Gatherings

And in the blink of an eye, three months has passed!! Since my last post, we've traversed many miles and visited lots of folks. We actually left Starry Night for a record three weeks this fall while she was still on the ground in the Deltaville Boatyard. We traveled by car to Connecticut to visit Steve's brother and his wife, Victoria.  While we were there, we enjoyed the fall colors and crisp air. I also had an opportunity to practice speaking Spanish with Victoria's parents, which improved my skills immensely!  (It also highlighted how far I still have to go 😏) Fall Colors in New Milford, CT Enjoying an Indian Summer Afternoon with Family Never ones to sit idle, Steve spent some time cutting down some fallen trees on David's property.  I helped haul the logs to the splitting station.
